Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has added a deeply personal masterpiece to his collection of luxury watches—a Jacob & Co. Matai Tourbillon, custom-designed as a tribute to his Samoan heritage and personal journey.

The actor and former wrestling superstar recently shared the story behind the unique timepiece, crafted to honor his roots, leadership, and warrior spirit.

A Chief’s Legacy

The name Matai—Samoan for “chief” or “leader”—perfectly captures the essence of Johnson’s connection to his culture and role as High Chief Seulie, a title bestowed upon him in Samoa.

“To create something that has such a deep connection to roots and culture, I was really moved by it,” Johnson said.

The watch, a one-of-a-kind custom design by Jacob & Co., draws inspiration from the intricate motifs of Johnson’s iconic Samoan tribal tattoo, which symbolizes his ancestors, struggles, and triumphs.

Warrior Spirit in Watchmaking

The Matai Tourbillon features a striking black dial intricately engraved with Polynesian patterns, mirroring the symbolic designs of Samoan tattoos.

At its core is a tribute to the warrior spirit—Johnson’s tattoo, located over his heart, is replicated on the watch’s dial.

Encased in 18K rose gold, the 45mm timepiece boasts a luxurious black alligator strap and a titanium and rose gold deployant buckle. These elements seamlessly blend the artistry of Polynesian culture with the technical brilliance Jacob & Co. is renowned for.

Beyond a Watch

For Johnson, the Matai Tourbillon isn’t merely a luxury accessory—it’s a celebration of identity and leadership.

“It’s out of respect for the character of Molly that I played, but also for the name Matai, which denotes a high chief. It’s out of respect and reverence,” Johnson shared, reflecting on the piece’s profound meaning.

With its intricate design and personal significance, the Matai Tourbillon is a superb work of art in the world of fine watchmaking.
